Prayers for service and well being of our veterans

On this Veterans Day we pay tribute to all military servicemen and women who have served to protect the freedom we enjoy -- freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of opportunity and justice for all. Some have made the supreme sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.

'We shall overcome' ourselves

The Bush administration's Christmas gift to America is a package of disaster.

Due to our foreign policy, the overall status of the United States among nations has diminished in esteem and respect.

Our country is currently striving to survive a tremendous downturn in our economy, regulations and oversight for the transactions and activity on Wall Street were either lax or non-existent.

Veterans Day Is every day

On this Veterans Day we pay tribute to all military servicemen and women who have served to protect the freedom we enjoy -- freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of opportunity and justice for all. Some have made the supreme sacrifice in defense of our freedoms. Many millions more have been wounded and suffer physical disabilities.

Throughout the years, families of veterans have also endured many hardships, physically, emotionally and financially.

Application for U.S presidency 700 days of effort

Can you imagine actively applying for a job every day for more than 700 days?

That is what John McCain and Barack Obama are doing. It has to be a tremendous stress and strain, emotionally, physically, and mentally. Just imagine traveling throughout the entire country day in and day out, making speeches, shaking hands, kissing babies, and eating on the run.

Imagine the amount of planning for all these appearances, the amount of supporters involved, the incredible million of dollars for publicity. It is amazing that a campaign can be organized and conducted so efficiently.

Sarah Palin's inexperience glaring in McCain presidential run

John McCain has chosen a comparative unknown on the national scene as his running mate in Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Governor Palin has many commendable personal attributes but lacks experience in overall national governance and foreign affairs.

Old guard Biden necessary for Obama to deal with Washington politics

Throughout his run for the presidency Barack Obama has preached for change, change for the way things go on in Washington. Yet, despite his disdain for the deal-making tactics that exist, he has chosen as his running mate, Joe Biden, a senator with 35 years of experience and involvement in so-called Washington politics.

I assume Obama realizes that it is necessary to continue working with the vestiges of the "old guard" if he lacks experience in foreign policy and in overall government administration.

Close overseas military bases and send National Guard and reservists home

With the develoment of the rapid deployment of forces concept, overseas bases are no longer essential, particularly in European countries. The closing of some bases would release troops who could then be assigned for duty in Iraq there by relieving national reservist.

There is no realistic purpose for our military to maintain the large number of overseas bases. It is about time other the other democratic nations accept responsability for their own security.

Parents of injured veterans become caregivers

A growing number of parents are, by necessity, stepping back into the role of caregiver for their veteran son or daughter who has returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with debilitating and long term injuries.

An estimated 10,000 young veterans of these wars now depend on their parents for their care. Many parents have become warriors themselves fighting to make sure this new wave of injured veterans get the medical care and rehabilitation they need.

A look at the Democratic primaries from an independent voter's point of view

Now that the Democratic primaries are over and Barack Obama has a substantial lead in delegates and superdelegates, what does it all mean?

$650B for Iraq War is only the beginning

The many billions of dollars spent so far on the Iraq war is peanuts compared to the unplanned costs for veterans health care and benefits. The cost of the war in Iraq is only in the early stages. The Department of Defense has not even taken into consideration the damage done indirectly to the future life of the veteran and his or her family. The D.O.D. has disclosed that nearly 40,000 troops have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), although they admit many more are likely keeping it a secret.
