'Stand Down' on 60 Minutes illustrates the need for America to take better care of its war veterans
I felt sick to my stomach watching a segment on 60 Minutes about what may a last refuge for our war veterans who are in despair, especially the homeless from as far back as the Vietnam War to the current blood shed on foreign soil in in Iraq and Afghanistan.

TV show looks at camp from a kid's point of view: 'I hate it here'
CBS Sunday Morning (Brighthouse channel 6 at 9 am) featured a story about kids’ letters from camp. It was laugh-out-loud funny and so familiar. Every kid who goes to camp wrote one during their first few days. It reminded me of the old song “Hello Mudder, Hello Fadder” (sung by Alan Sherman) which in my day was very popular, right on point and also funny unless you were that kid writing the letter.

With children back in school, recent reduction in crossing guards sets dangerous precedent
Our children are our future. That’s a fact. They will grow up, hopefully, and run this country someday. And how do we treat these future leaders of our land? Abysmally, that’s how.

Speaking English is the American way
I caught a snippet of news that really got my dander up. It seems some students in Morgan Hill, Calif., at Live Oak High School, wore American Flag T-shirts to school on Cinco De Mayo and were told by the vice principal, Miguel Rodriguez, that they had to turn their shirts inside out or be suspended. This supposedly came about because the Hispanic students protested their wearing the shirts on a Hispanic holiday, thus in their minds disrespecting their heritage.

Think you own all of your own body? Think again
I would bet that you think you own every part of your body, don’t you? Well, you would be wrong about that. Let me explain.

Not standing for Pledge of Allegiance is un-American
I am outraged that the Florida Board of Education has put out a memo excusing students from having to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of our country. First, we have our president who does not place his hand over his heart when the National Anthem is being played and now our children can ignore the significance of our flag.
Part of the reason for this is the one nation “under God” part which may offend some students in a class. Well, too bad!

We need to take care of our own in this country first
I don’t usually watch the news because the political stuff frustrates and angers me, but the other evening I was doing something else when the news came on television. Sure enough it got my dander up.

Baby car seats have expiration dates for a good reason: Safety
I learned an interesting thing recently that I bet most of you didn’t know either. My friend has a new grand-baby so I asked my yard-saler Mom to be on the lookout for a car seat for her.

U.S. needs to move faster to transport orphaned Haitian children to new families in America
If I had money or influence with the U. S. government the very next cargo plane leaving Haiti would carry every orphan I could find to a place of safety where they would have food, water and medicine and not be sleeping outside on mattresses and blankets on the ground.
