Florida Senate seat 8: Keep the power on or turn It off?

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Republican House member Dorothy Hukill and Volusia County Council Chairman Frank Bruno are and have been engaged in a mighty battle to represent District 8 in the Florida Senate. When the dust settles, the individual standing will represent most of Volusia County, a large part of Marion County and a sliver of Lake County.

Headline Surfer will issue its endorsement following an Oct. 21 public candidate debate between the two at the Brannon Center in New Smyrna Beach, sponsored and moderated by the New Smyrna Beach-based 24/7 Internet newspaper.

ORLANDO -- The Orlando Sentinel has endorsed the candidacy of Democrat and Volusia County Chair Frank Bruno for the dist. 8 state senate seat over Republican State Rep. Dorothy Hukill, dismissing her as a "loyal soldier for House GOP leaders"  who has sponsored "truly bad bills."

DAYTONA BEACH -- Jason Davis, the upstart county chair candidate snubbed in an earlier Tiger Bay Club debate that featured fellow candidates Carl Persis and Ted Doran, remained an after-thought Tuesday with a new debate between dist. 8 State Senate candidates Dorothy Hukill and Frank Bruno.

With the appearance of egg on its face after Davis finished second in the Aug. 14 primary to Persis to force a runoff in November, Tiger Bay turned to the biggest political heavyweights, Republican State Rep. Hukill and Democrat Bruno, Volusia's county chair.

TAMPA -- Robert Fortner, a GOP state committeeman from DeLand liked what he heard from Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in his acceptance speech at the convention.

"He gave us what we wanted to hear," the 68-year-old retired custom automotive car and boat manufacturer said on his way back to his hotel. "He had a job to do to accept the nomination and he delivered. He was very positive for the country's future."

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Dustin Havens and Christopher Kelly are the cream of the crop in Tuesday's crowded field for Volusia County Judge, group 4.

If this were the general election, we'd have to pick one of them. But with five altogether in the race and no incumbent, unless one candidate gets 50 percent of the votes plus one vote, then the top two vote getters will move on to the general election in November. With that said, we are endorsing Havens and Kelly for your consideration.
