Funeral service for Mabel E. Kirkland, 96, of Samsula, Florida, who passed away Sunday, August 22, 2010, will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 26 at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach chapel, with the Reverend Luke McKinney, First Baptist Church, New Smyrna Beach, officiating. Burial will follow at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater. Calling hours will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 25 at Settle-Wilder.
She was born March 1, 1914 in North Brookfield, Nova Scotia, Canada. Along with her parents and seven siblings she moved to Florida in 1928. Mabel and her husband, Jack Kirkland (1908–1991), established Kirkland Sod in Samsula in 1956. Mabel enjoyed the farm business, crocheting, china painting, and traveling back to her old homeplace in Nova Scotia. She was an active member of the Samsula Baptist Church.
Mabel is survived by her two children, Margaret MacArthur and Elmer Kirkland; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and eighteen great-great grandchildren. We miss her.
