DAYTONA BEACH – A 3-year-old girl drowned this afternoon in an inflatable pool while the mother left her alone wih her 4-year-old brother to go to the bathroom in what police said appears to be a “tragic accident.”
Victoria Cunningham was found dead about 5:41 p.m. in an inflatable pool in the garage of a home at 808 Derbyshire Road.
Cunningham was in the garage with her 4-year-old brother, who was not injured. Police said the brother’s name was not available.
The mother, Tonya Causey, 38, told police she had left the children in an inflatable pool in the garage while she used the bathroom. When she returned, the 3-year-old was under water, police said. The inflatable pool appeared to be 8- to 10-feet long, with less than 2 feet of water inside.
“The investigation is ongoing, it appears to be a tragic accident,” Daytona Beach police spokesman Jimmie Flynt said, but added an investigation is ongoing.
The little girl is the fifth small child in Volusia County so far in 2011 to drown so far in a private pool seventh in the last two years.
