Peter Mallory named award-winning blogger by the Florida Press Club


Peter co-publisher Peter Mallory is a finalist in the Florida Press Club Awards in the category of best blogger. He will receive either a first, second or third place showing at a banquet Saturday in St. Augustine.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- For the first time in the history of Florida journalism, an exclusively online newspaper has received an award: The Florida Press Club has named Peter Mallory, co-publisher of as an award-winning blogger for 2011.

Mallory is a founding publisher of along with Henry Frederick, who also serves as its editor.

Mallory, as chief financial officer, initially financed the company, NSB NEWS LLC with Frederick, serving as the chief executive officer.

Together, they launched on April 7, 2008, as Florida's first fully-online newspaper. is the only newspaper located in New Smyrna Beach, with its 24/7 coverage focused on the seaside city along with neighboring Edgewater and Oak Hill, and as warranted, stories across Volusia County.

This  was the first year, the Florida Press Club allowed online-only newspapers to submit nominations for excellence in journalism awards. Mallory, 76, was named a finalist for three blogs entered in the category of award-winning blogger. Among his winning entries dealt with the nation's economy, past and present; his son's election as a circuit judge and the planning problems in New Smyrna Beach. Frederick, who has won nearly two dozen journalism industry awards for breaking news and investigative reporting at daily newspapers in Florida, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts, and a national investigative award, said of Mallory: "Peter and I work great together. He has a deep appreciation for writing that has meaning and evokes emotion. Peter is truly deserving of this award and I am very excited that Peter's award is the first for an online publication.

Frederick said it's prophetic that would get recognition from the Florida Press Club, with the majority of its awards geared to traditional print media.

"While other columnists throughout Florida will receive awards for blogging, those were written for traditional newspapers," Frederick said. "Peter's award truly represents online blogging."

Mallory graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School in 1953 and then obtained bachelor's and master's degrees from MIT in 1957 and 1958. He spent the next 34 years in the field of electronic communications with concentration in the areas of signal synchronization and detection and the area of error correction codes for the federal government. He has published six papers and has six patents in the area of signal synchronization.

Mallory served on the board of Daytona State College for two terms as well as the Utilities Commission of New Smyrna Beach for three terms, where he was chairman for two years. He was a little league football and baseball coach for five years. Mallory has given guest lectures at the high school and community college in the areas of economics and mathematics.

His son Peter, for whom one of his blogs is designated, is a circuit judge in Panama City, and his daughter, Betsy lives in Titusville. He has two granddaughters, Mallory and Mary Christine. Mallory's late wife, Jackie, was very active in politics and was president of the Southeast Volusia Republican Club for two terms. She served on the hospital board on two different occasions. The Hospital annex was dedicated to her on her retirement. Jackie Mallory was active in raising money for the American Cancer Society.
