HOLLY HILL -- Volusia County Sheriff's deputies are on the lookout this weekend for a gunman who opened fire early Friday on a man outside a bottle club -- bullets striking his leg and hand early Friday.

The 35-year-old victim, Jeffrey Hanks, no stranger to law enforcement himself on gun and burglary charges, was transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach with injuries that were not life threatening.

If Hanks knew who it was who leaned out a back seat window and shot him, he wasn't talking when questioned in the ER. And neither were any of his friends outside the Papis Bottle Club, 1376 N. Nova Road, when deputies arrived two minutes after the 4:23 a.m. shooting incident.

"Due to the victim and other witnesses being uncooperative, deputies have yet to learn what sparked the confrontation," Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.

Deputies found a bleeding Hanks on the ground with gunshot wounds to his left hand and right leg. They learned that the shooter was a passenger in a black, late 1990's model Chevy Impala who had leaned out his window and fired two shots at Hanks and the group he was walking with.

The gunman was described as a white man with a shaved head except for a patch of dreadlocks on top and he had gold caps on all of his teeth.

"Hanks had apparently previously argued with the suspect when they both left another club, Daytona's Last Call," Haught said. "The suspect got into the Impala while Hanks and the group of people he was with walked toward Papis."

The sheriff's spokesman said the arguing continued as the Impala slowly drove by Hanks. Finally, the car backed up toward the group of walkers and the gunman opened fire on his intended victim, Hanks.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at (386) 323-0151 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida, toll-free, at (888) 277-TIPS. Individuals can also text a tip to Crime Stoppers by texting "TIP231 plus the message" to CRIMES. Tipsters who provide information to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.
