Lynne Plaskett: Strong advocate for New Smyrna Beach's Westside

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- In three weeks, our city commission will have two new members, as Jim Hathaway leaves to seek election to the Volusia County Council and Lynne Plaskett leaves to enjoy retirement.

Last week I wrote about my respect for fellow commissioner Jim Hathaway, and how Jim's experience and wisdom have enabled me to learn and broaden my knowledge of issues that only comes from Jim's tenure and two decades of service to the community. The "city" and community held "bon voyage" party for Commissioner Lynne Plaskett at the Babe James Center.

For the last three years, I have had the privilege to serve on the commission with Lynne. Her expertise in land use and planning has been evident in many of the lively discussions on issues concerning these matters. However, Lynn has been the strongest advocate for matters related to the Historic Westside, which she has represented with a passion for the three years we have served together.

I am sure we can all relate to the fact that we are creatures of habit, we socialize with the same people, eat at a handful of select restaurants, and maintain a similar "Life" pattern week-to-week. I too fall into this routine of life.

Thanks to Lynn's passion for the Historic Westside, our vision for the city is holistic in nature. My respect for Lynn's passion to represent her district is unquestionable.

The challenge moving forward will be to embrace Lynne's passion and attempt to fill her shoes as a strong advocate for the Historic Westside and to represent the city holistically.
