Sheldon Street resident beaten with sawed-off shotgun by would-be robber

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Despite being repeatedly beaten with a sawed-off shotgun, a Sheldon Street resident refused to give up his money to a would-be robber who attacked him in his yard last night, police said.
The 39-year-old victim was struck several times in the arms and legs in the 8:40 p.m. robbery attempt, but refused to give up the money he received after cashing his Social Security check, police Detective Dan Kennedy said this morning.
Even as he was being accosted in his yard in the 300 block of Sheldon, which is off Washington, the victim repeatedly said "no" when the cash was demanded from him, Kennedy said.
Police responded to a 9-1-1 call but upon arrival, the victim refused medical treatment.
His attacker was described as black, 18 to 25 years of age, who stood about 5 feet 5, with a deep voice. He was wearing a light-grey hooded sweatshirt, dark-colored sweat pants and black sneakers.
Kennedy said the victim told police he didn't know his attacker and police are sorting out how the attacker knew the victim had cashed a check.
Anyone with information on the would-be robber is askd to call Detective Kennedy at (386) 424-2247.
