NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Children and adults alike Youth and adults soon will have a convenient avenue to success. The City of New Smyrna Beach is partnering on two education programs to make it easier for youth and adults to receive their GED.

Both programs are free and will be offered at the Alonzo “Babe” James Community Center, 201 N. Myrtle Ave. Not only are the programs offered in a community center, but they also are self-paced, which allows students to progress individually. Classes begin August 20, but enrollment is continuous.

NSB Fire Chief Dave McCallisterNEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Fire Chief Dave McCallister is being honored with the Volusia League of Cities' Distinguished Service Award for 2012.

McCallister was recommended by the VLOC nominating committee and voted in by the organization's executive committee.

This award is presented to outstanding individuals who have made their community, and Volusia County as a whole, a better place to live.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- City officials are pinning their hopes for inclusion of Canal Street in a new CRA district with the Brannon Center as its pinnacle.

The Brannon Center was the focal point of a day-long visioning and goal-setting workshop at the Atlantic Centyer for the Arts for the City Commission and top administrative brass.

Memorial service for Helen "Country Girl" Colgan, age 73, of New Smyrna Beach, who died Wednesday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange, will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Settle-Wilder Chapel, New Smyrna Beach, with Chaplain Laura Walters Baskett, Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, officiating. Entombment of cremated remains will follow at Edgewater/New Smyrna Cemetery.
