Which Portion Of The Cerebral Cortex Is Most Closely Adjacent To The Ears?

It is the Temporal lobe of the Cerebral Cortex which is most closely adjacent to the Ears. The Temporal Lobe is the lower lobe of the cortex among the three other major lobes. It plays a vital role in both object and language recognition and is also responsible for creating and storing long-term memory as well as consciousness.

Temporal Lobe also plays a major role in sound and visual processing and any dysfunction in it may lead to dysfunction in the mind as well. As a result, one may lose the inhibition of taking anything and memory impairments too.

This lower lobe lies behind the temples at the bottom middle portion of the brain in the skill. On the other hand, it also sits above the cerebellum and brain stem. The two other lobes that are present above this lobe are the Frontal and parietal lobes. The occipital lobe lies just behind the lobe.

The functions of the Temporal lobe surround auditory stimuli, emotion, and memory, etc. It contains the primary auditory complex making it the first and foremost area responsible for interpreting information from the ears in the form of sounds.

The Lobe functions by receiving different frequencies, pitches and sounds from the ears and filters the information. This part of the brain is the reason behind the interpretation of different sounds with meaning. Wernicke’s area is a region in this lobe that is responsible for processing and giving meaning to sound. 

On top of this, Temporal is also responsible for Selective hearing as it serves the main function of filtering out unnecessary frequencies. Thus, one can focus on the important sound amidst various other noises. Well, this function is a combined effort of both visual and hearing function, as you can select the voice you need to focus on.

Not only this, but the Temporal lobe is also helpful to establish object recognition and preserve it in the memory. It is the main part of the brain which helps in recognizing a face and makes it different from other faces around.  The dysfunction of the Temporal lobe in aged people is the reason why they can recognize people soon.

Apart from hearing and visuals, Temporal Lobe serves a vital role in understanding the speech and adding the proper meaning to it. Broca’s area in the lobe plays a vital part to understand and distinguish the language irrespective of the condition you are in.

Other than the central nervous system, Temporal Lobe is also a vital part of the limbic system with incredible significances. The limbic system is essential for a better networking of learning, memory, emotion, and motivation. When the system interacts with the brain, the Temporal Lobe is the main area that comes in direct contact with the system to control the components.

In the Limbic System, the Temporal Lobe interacts with the structures namely the amygdala and hippocampus. These structures are important for different processes like learning, attention, and memory, etc. Interaction with those structures influences the memory as well as conscious long-term memory in the brain.
